Recognising Newer Graphics Cards for Sims2
#101 29-07-2013
I did a little more digging, and it turns out that KB2670838 supplies Windows 7 with some DX 11.1 features and that is why it is needed by IE10. And darthfluffle, I looked at your log and found bumpmapping is off. Try to see if you can enable it. To see what bumpmapping can do...

Also, only cards that support DX11 will get the update, meaning only Radeon 7000 and GTX 600 and newer will get the update and have texture memory problems because of it.

Thanks so much for this thread! I have Windows 8 on a new gaming system with an AMD Radeon 7800 card. I've read pretty much all of these posts and tried to follow the directions carefully. Not getting it solved though.

I've zipped my Video Cards.sgr, Graphics Rules.sgr, and config-log files, and am attaching that archive.

My config file says the latest installed EP is EP9 -- Apartment Life, if I'm not mistaken. And that's where I've customized the .sgr files, in both the /CSConfig and /Config folders. It's still listing only 800x600 as the option for screen size.. May monitor is something like 1680 x 1050 by recommended value.

Could you please have a look and let me know if you see what might be causing the problem?

OK - First thing your Config-log.txt says your texture memory is 32Mb - so that's one big problem right there.
Now, my guess is that because you've put your changes into Apartment Life (Which is EP08 by the way), any changes you've made aren't being picked up. EP09 is Mansion and Gardens.

Because you have an AMD Radeon 7800 card (i.e. the same as mine), I'm just going to parcel up mine and send them to you.

You'll need to put them in the Mansion and Gardens Config and CSConfig folders.

Oh -- sorry -- Yes, it did! I thought I had sent a long message expressing my thanks and explaining a few other things. Maybe I thought it had sent but it didn't?

Very happy, very grateful to Kiri -- and it did work!

Glad to hear you got expansions installed on Windows 8, as well as fixed the texture memory issue with the presence of Direct X 11.1 and Internet Explorer 10. I'll keep this in mind if I ever need IE 10 for some reason, and a VM won't suffice.

I have an AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series card and have avoided the platform update for a long time. Does anyone else have this card and if so are you able to confirm whether it has this issue? (Yes, it does) This would make a good sticky if all the fixed files were linked to from a single post.

OK, so taking your 7800 files, I simply added a line for the 6800 series to the Video Cards file. The Graphics Rules are the same and it seems to run fine. Perhaps someone else wants to test it?

OK, there is the log.

Hi RawMilk. I'm making a tutorial on how to do all of this. It's just taking me a little longer than I thought.

Radeon 6800 series has a different hex id, and adding your card to the list doesn't do anything anyways. You shouldn't be able to get the update anyways, since you don't have a DX11.1 capable card. The only issue you should have with any card other than a Radeon 7000 series is texture memory, which can be fixed. As long as your card is capable of performing these tasks and is not mistaken for another card that is not strong enough by the game, you shouldn't run into any issues with older games. Of course there are games that will run only on XP or Windows 98 SE, but that is not really related to hardware. A lot of the best games from that period have been modified allowing them to run on newer OS anyways, such as DOOM. Hopefully EA will release a Sims 2 complete on Origin or something soon.
