No Windows 8.

I'm running sims on XP and Windows 7, and I had to update for both.

Tested it with my gf's laptop... Win 7, Intel HD graphics. Shadows are all fine... Must have been Windows 8 or my 13.8 beta drivers. Kiri, could you tell me what driver you use for your 7800? Also the operating system. (but presumably Win 7.)

I'm using Windows 7.

I have an AMD Radeon 7800, which was last updated with driver version 12.104.0.0 and dated 28/03/2013 (that's dd/mm/yyyy).

Just a quick update: I ended up figuring out how to force the game to run on the NVIDIA chip, and now it works fine! I found a way to do it via the NVIDIA control panel, since nothing I changed with the game seemed to do anything. Thank you for all your patience, guys. Sorry it took me so long to get back! Other things came up.

I've read through this thread but, as a complete file altering newbie, I'm still pretty much in the dark about what I have to change.

All my graphics options are set to high but for some reason the water in my neighbourhoods is flat blue and the grass is low res. CAS works fine and on lots the reflections are all there but the only refresh rate I can select is 60 and the Smooth Edges option is greyed out.

My OS is Windows 8 and my graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M. I know it's a laptop card but I've never played the game on a desktop and this has never been an issue before (even with older, worse cards). My laptop also has integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 but I have set the game to run using NVIDIA.

I have attached my Graphics Rules and Video Cards .sgr files and my config.log. For some reason it's only showing my Intel graphics under Display Devices. Could this be the issue? Can someone tell me exactly what I need to change please? So many questions, I know, but I want smooth edges back in my life!

EDIT: So I added 'card 0x0FDF "GeForce GT 740M" to the end of the NVIDIA list in Video Cards.sgr and my game still ran fine. But it hadn't made any difference to my graphics options/settings (i.e everything says it's set to high but it's not). I tried setting everything to low and then setting everything back to high in case that reset it or something but nope. In fact, neither the grass nor the water changed in hood view. Is there something else I need to be changing?

ANOTHER UPDATE: I went into device manager and completely disabled my onboard Intel graphics to make sure there was absolutely no way for the game to use that and now I'm getting an error message saying there's no DirectX 9.0c compatible device on this computer. So I really need to figure out how to force the game to recognise the NVIDIA card as it seems my game keeps using the Intel graphics even after being set to run with the better one.

05/10/2013: I've been dicking about with this thing for about a week now (changing things, seeing if it works, changing it back etc.) and I'm no closer to figuring it out. I have added both my NVIDIA and my Intel graphics to the Video Cards file (I think did it correctly) but I've had no luck with the Graphics Rules files.

Does any body have ANY suggestions? Any suggestions at all? I'm just about ready to throw my hands up and admit defeat.

Sorry about the delay in helping.

Can you post up both your Graphic Rules, and Video Cards file for me. I'll have a look at it, and let you know what's happening.

The Directx error can be caused when there's been a change in the Graphic Rules file and it's wrong, as well for the error it's actually talking about.

Can you change both of these files to the original settings, and now that you've disabled Intel Graphics, run the game and get the config.log file. If it is still coming up with 'No DirectX 9.0c compatible device that means that although the old card has been disabled, it can't find the new card.

I don't know enough to work out how to enable the new card - it's not part of the game, but the operating system. However, there was a poster previously who had this problem and fixed it.

According to Darthfluffle, you have to go to the NVidia control panel and set it up there. I have a Radeon card, so I'm unable to help you with this one any further than that.

Thanks for replying!

Well, I restored the files to their original settings, disabled Intel graphics and ran the game. It ran but it appears to be using the Microsoft Basic Render Driver because holy flashing pink Pleasantview! The NVIDIA tray icon is also showing absolutely no GPU activity when running the game with Intel disabled.

I've attached the config.log and the Graphics Rules and Video Cards files (both my original one and the one I think I added the cards to....I don't think I did it right).
