Apparently I'm late to the party on this one. Just saw it on TV for the first time today, but it was posted a year ago and apparently was a big hit.
WARNING: The video contains some disturbing violence. But it's a powerful message and a great song.

my guess is that they do write original stuff, but they're not allowed to use it in the program. I know that Guy Sebastian who was in Australian Idol only did all the pop crap for the show, but his first album was all original and a different style entirely.

They do sometimes attempt to perform an original song, but it never goes over as well as songs the audience already knows and loves. Guess that's why original songs on those shows are quite rare. The talent also varies greatly, of course - some contestants are likely good at writing original material, while others may not write anything at all.

The Trews - Highways of Heroes
For those wondering - the "Highway of Heroes" is an approximately 150km stretch of highway in Canada. It's the route they take when driving soldiers killed in action (usually overseas) from the air force base to the coroner's office, and people line the overpasses along the way to pay their respects. This happened today (or technically yesterday) when a soldier killed in Ottawa on Wednesday was driven to his hometown along the same route.
