If you wish to find out more info on the PSU, there would be a large sticker on it, that can indeed only be read if you open the case.
But since you now finally have an error message to go on, and want to avoid spending more money on it - which I understand -, you should first try every trick that you come across on the internet. So confinue reading that article you linked to, @asoivel, and try everything...

-config-log.txt from the Logs folder in the My Documents\EA\The Sims2\ Click "full editor" below to attach a text file. - Your operating System.
- What the problem actually is - that will be a picture to show the problem (optional), and accompanying text files that turn up (optional), and a detailed description of what happened, and what you expected to happen.
