Beystan - you also need a video cards.sgr - that may help. We've been finding that with windows 8, and the ultimate collection that video cards.sgr matter. They're fairly easy to generate but I've done it for you.
Download video card.sgr - Beystan
Video cards are particular to the device - if you have a look in your config.txt you'll see that the chipset has a vendor of 8086 - that's intel, and a device of 0f31 - that's your card.
That may not fix the problem, but it will help. If you can do that, then come back to me - we'll work on what's next to do if that doesn't work.

This isn't a "help me" post, it's a "thanks for this thread" post.
Really wanted to thank everyone on this thread for their invaluable contributions to what can be a really troublesome issue to deal with. I am getting things in order so I can (finally) purchase a new desktop (which will of course have a newer graphic card) & in the back of my mind was the thought that I had read about Sims 2 & possible graphic card conflicts, & that "somewhere out there" I had seen a thread about how to go about solving any such conflicts. I dimly remembered that thread being on LeeFish & was really afraid that I either hallucinated it (a distinct possibility with me) or that it had been taken down as being irrelevant after all this time. Needless to say I was seriously thrilled to find this thread again!
So again, I just wanted to say "thank you" to LeeFish & all the folks who have provided the information here. Thanks a bundle- you guys are awesome! (And with luck, I won't have to post a "dear lord, help me" plea of my own in the near future...)

CLAUDIA-config-log.txt (Size: 10.34 KB / Downloads: 428) Attached is a copy of my config-log
I have windows 8.1. All EP's and Sp's work beautifully up to Mansion and gardens. When I install mansion and gardens, it runs when I click on the short cut, but after I choose an area such as Belladona or others the screen becomes black. I can toggle back to the sims screen but as soon as I touch anything on the sims screen it becomes black again. I have tried updating the graphics.sgr and videocard.sgr from this forum but it is still doing the same thing. I have also tried to run it in various compatibility modes. I specifically have a Dell inspiron 20 3043 all in one with Celeron N2830 dual core 2.16 Ghz processors, 4GB Ram, plenty of hard drive available, 64 bit system. I have also tried adding tags to the short cut telling the game to only run using one CPU that also did not seem to work. If you have any other ideas I would appreciate it. I'm about to pull my hair out. In addition my Video card is Intel HD Graphics same as a previous post here Vendor 8086 which I assume is intel Device 0f31.

@tylersada I've had a look at your config log - and it's ok and fixed as far as the graphic rules and video card goes.
When you're trying it out in compatibility modes - have you selected to run it as administrator? That makes a huge difference.
I suspect doing that will fix your problems. Come back if it doesn't. Compatibility will need to be Windows 7 I think for 8.1

I went back in and am running as administrator. I also unchecked the run this program in compatibility mode. This had caused me some issues in my earlier eps. It is now running Ok. Thank you for your response. this has been a bear. I'm not looking forward to Windows 10.

OK. That's interesting. It sounds like they may have done a fix in Windows 8.1 for that (I'm using Windows 7 so all info about Windows 8 is being gotten from the people who have problems and how they're resolved together).
For Everyone to note:
Windows 10, I'm not upgrading to on my main machine for work reasons, but I hope to do so on my laptop and will do my best to work out any and all issues.
PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS A NEW THREAD FOR WINDOWS 10 problems. Please use that instead when you have windows 10 problems.

Here's my the sims 2 Castaway stories log.
It has seriously some graphic glitch that are making me crazy.
I have an Intel HD graphics video card (as soon as possible I'll change it)
windows 64 bit, 2.0 ghz processor, 1 tb and 8 gb ram.
The sims 2 works fine.
Obv, the sims 3 doesn't even start because of intel card.

hi kiri,
thank you so much for this thread! it helped me a bunch!
i have one problem though. when i first loaded the game the water graphics were blocky and the screen flickered when i would play in build/buy mode. i followed your instructions for the water (i downloaded the file attached) and it fixed the issue. however, the flickering was still a problem. the anti-aliasing slider was gray, so i looked up how to fix that. i went into my config-log and changed all the enumerateMultisampleLevels to true to get the slider to work. i put it on the maximum setting, and it solved the flickering. but once i fixed that, the water went back to the way it was when i first started. i have a copy of the graphics rules in both folders it's supposed to be in. is there something i messed up in my config-log or do you think there's another issue?
also, i'm running windows 8.1 and i have a 1.3ghz dual core intel i5 with onboard intel graphics 5000 (i'm running windows through bootcamp on my mac but i don't think that's the problem)

@eileen91 I've had a look - it's definitely not picking up your changed graphic rules. I have castaway stories myself, so I'm going to try install it, and see if I can see what's happening.
@joke I'm not sure - when you say that you made the changes... did you download the Graphics Rules-INTEL.rar file? Or did you key in changes yourself?

i downloaded the intel file. when i put those files into the folders, the graphics improved, but the flickering was still there. so that's when i tried maximizing smooth shading, but the option was grayed out. i manually changed all the enumerateMultisampleLevels to true so i could have the anti-aliasing option. like i said it fixed the flickering, but the graphics went back to the way they originally were.
OK. If the enumerateMultisampleLevels was false when you put that in, it means that your system doesn't naturally register for the Hi-Level. Changing the anti-aliasing to true won't fix the other things that also need to be set up.
Looking at your stats on your machine - you've got a CPU of 2660MHz - which is medium rather than high according to the graphics. Now I suspect your machine is probably a dual or quad core, so you don't actually have only 2660MHz. However Sims 2 came out when there was no such thing, so while it will use all your CPU, it doesn't recognise it when defining things, and so thinks you are on a slower machine. Your memory and graphics card is fine.
So you're going to need to use GraphicsRules-INTEL-MedCPU.rar file instead to get the right things. That will let the game know that you are actually OK for CPU. That card is also in the first post.
Once you have this card in, and you have smoothing set to high, you should be better off. However, regardless - can you post up your config log after you've done the change.
Also - please double check that you are running the game as administrator.
Please
