Well, first of all, thanks for your quick reply, second, I didn't install any expansion packs yet, it's the base game, and I changed the compatibility many times, (as windows 7, xp sp3, xp and vista) one thing I forgot to mention, when I tried to reinstall it, at disc 4 there was an error copying some font file, a problem occured when trying to transfer the file 'TSData/Res/UI/Fonts/AR Heiti2 B5 (bold).mxf' from the media, this happened at 85% of installation, I installed it by making 4 iso files on my hard drive and mounting them (since the CD-Rom is very slow and always stuck), anyways, I had to download this file from somewhere else and copied it manually and it worked, the installation continued and everything was ok, till I opened the bodyshop, anyways, I found someone having a similar problem here: http://uoem.com/forums/threads/texture-d...sue.7037/, the guy had a similar video card (ATI Mobility Radeon), so I was wondering, would it be my video card? cause I downloaded the microsoft directx end-user runtime, installed it and the problem still there?

My brand new computer's AMD Radeon R7 260X was not recognised by the Sims 2 game, so I folllowed the steps at the start of this thread. It worked a treat, I could adjust the smooth edges, game looked great.
After exiting the game, my 2 day old pc has gone dead. It does not respond to anything, just a black screen....it this because of what I changed? Did I ruin my new pc?
And, since it won't respond to any mouse clicking, do I just manually turn it off?
I realise I cannot expect an instant answser, and I willl let the pc sit and do it's thinking for a while (although it's now been over 40 mins and I'm getting very nervous)

I seems unlikely that you broke your PC. If it is indeed broken, then it may be something that is covered under the warranty.
I know this sounds corny, but please check if the monitor wires are connected properly, and if the monitor power is on. Even experienced users will sometimes miss one of these. If everything seems ok, maybe you should indeed turn off the PC and reboot after a few minutes. Beyond that, *I* know very little to help you with. Hopefully, someone else has more advice for you.

Changing the Graphic Rules for Sims 2 will NOT cause that to happen. Boiling Oil is correct in saying that it could be (a) monitor-related, or (b) computer-related.
When you say that it does not respond to anything, do you hear the hard drive turning when you click anything or press F4 or Control Alt Delete? If you don't then it actually has gone dead. I had this happen to my day old computer and it turned out that the Hard Drive with the operating system was faulty, and had an intermittent fault. If it has a warranty - take it back to the manufacturer and get it fixed.

The black screen eventually turned to blue, but no error messages. After giving the pc time to 'recuperate' and still nothing happened for aaaaaages, I manually switched it off, turned it back on, and it is functioning again, without doing anything to the wires etc...
When changing the graphic rules was not the cause for this to happen, could it be either of these two things I did :
a. I left the old graphic rules sgr, the renamed one, in the same folder as the new one. Should I have moved it to the desk top?
b. I exited the game from (a date) Downtown, without saving. Could this cause my pc to have 'lost the plot?'
I am asking because I actually uninstalled the all the Sims 2 games, being too afraid to encounter this problem again (even though the pc survived) but after having played with smooth lines and how well the game played on the new pc...well I am tempted again...

I think you did not have to uninstall the game at all. Your PC may just have been 'asleep'. There should be a way to get a PC to wake up when it is in such a state, but sometimes this method isn't properly configured, in which case it's hard to figure out how to get it back up. Shutting it down and then booting it up should do the trick - which is why I suggested that.

@Lisbelle you did NOT have to uninstall the games. Please feel confident in re-installing them.
I am 100% sure the graphic rules is not the problem. I have over half a dozen graphic rules in my game that have been renamed, and they don't affect anything. The graphic rules in these threads have been downloaded and used over 10,000 times (actually it's closer to 20,000).
Even though your PC is only 2 days old, that doesn't mean that it can't have glitches, it doesn't need drivers updating, or it doesn't have a problem that needs fixing.
If this happened to me, this is what I would do -
0. What BO said, just restart it. If it kept on happening after that:
1. make sure that my graphics drivers are up to date. PC's are often delivered with graphic drivers that were installed on the system up to 3 months prior to it being delivered to you.
2. try to make it happen again. If it doesn't happen again in the same place - then the problem is not the place it occurred, it's just the last thing that worked correctly before the problem was triggered.
3. get a cpu heat monitor. I use HWmonitor (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor...tory.html) if the PC is overheating, it will show up in the heat monitor. Mine was crashing on 60C. How many fans do you have in your PC? This may be a signal that either you don't have enough cooling, or your graphics card is overworking. For me it was not enough cooling (I had to clean out the cat hairs )
4. do a scan with your anti-virus.
5. Check your power functions. (If it's a laptop - power save functions can cause a problem similiar to this)
