Well, it is a much cooler system that it looks at first sight (I think). If you use the link to the unreads it will jump you to the unread posts - and then if you click on the green arrow it will take you to the first unread post in that thread - it is marked with "unread post" in red.

So it is actually quite handy to use the userpanel link to jump back to the list every time you have finished reading in a certain thread.
