Recognising Newer Graphics Cards for Sims2
#261 19-01-2014
Hey Kiri! WAW I'm really surprised you could reproduce it so well, even the Sim!! (or so bad due to the "quiality" hahaha") Yeah I put the file in both of them! So if it worked for you when you turned down you memory, it's due to that? When you have any answer tell me! It's really a weird mess... Confused And thank you sooo much for your work, you are the best Kiri!!!

Hi Catherine, I've been looking through your files (finally, sorry about the delay).

There's one file that I need that missing, that's the <my computer name>-config-log.txt from the logs folder where you play your game (in the My documents).

I'm working on your graphics card rules as it is now, but I do need that to see how your game is seeing what you have.

Beautiful, thanks Catherine. Will update here when I'm done.

I have some bad news.

Your config log says that the game is already on hi-res, hi-cpu. So it's not the game that's causing you problems. Basically what is happening, is that while the game has remained the same, the way the DirectX/Graphics engine works hasn't. That means tweaking your graphic rules won't necessarily fix anything. It recognises your texture memory, so that's not a problem either. There's nothing the graphic rules code that is stopping your game from working. In fact I compared your config-log with mine, and with Lee's and it has the same device properties as Lees for the Nvidia, and for Lee and Mine for the non-specific stuff.

OK.

So that means that we have to tweak other things. I talked to Lee, and she mentioned that she had heard that the DirectX version shipped with Windows 8 was a problem, so I'm going to look into seeing if we can tweak your DirectX to fix this problem.

I'm also going to do some research into the NVidia card tomorrow.

The other thing I want you do to is some tests for me:
1. Can you do some screenshots of your main problems. Resolution, etc. This will help to me be able to check for specific fixes.
2. Second up - can you do some testing building and so on, without your CC in it. I do not think the CC is necessarily doing anything, but if I seek EA/NVidia/DirectX/Microsoft help with some very specific questions, they will ask about CC, and being able to say that we tested Vanilla without CC, will stop them from using that as an excuse.

Well... pooh-yay?
So, I got a good card, and it is doing everything it's supposed to do - that's the "yay" part.
And, it's not enough. Pooh. Silly old bear.

OK - I'll get some in game 'vanilla' pictures for you in just a bit...
Also, I'm on Vista 64-bit, not 7 or 8. Not sure if that makes any difference?
...back in a bit.

OK - I have 5 pictures for you. All are at 100% res, but shrunk to 1000px wide. The grass detail actually looks better than I remembered... These are without my DL folder (I forgot and left SavedSims in - so some of the body shop stuff is in there) But, CEP, _RLS-Shaders, _Moi_shaderRoof_SS_ColourationFull, _murano_millenium_SHADER, _NumenorDizzy2_GlobalHack_Smarter-Lights_AllGames - and all my defaults/hacks/etc... are gone.

Which of the above shader/files do I really need to keep? ...besides CEP Wink I hope this will help. Oh! I also have custom cameras - would that be making a difference too?
Like I said earlier - I really like the shadows on full. If possible.
Thanks,
Cat

Yeah - I got that you're on Vista. I'm going to be looking at things now, so I'll get back to you with what you can do.

Catherine - when you installed your game, did you install it with a compatibility setting of XP Service Pack 2?

That might make a huge difference, if you haven't.

Um... I don't remember. It was 6 years ago. Is there a way to check/change it without re-installing?

ETA: Here's a picture showing my 'properties' settings. If all I have to do is tick the box... do I need to tick the box for each EP/SP?

Yeah. you don't need to reinstall - just change the running. Have you had your O/S of Vista 64bit for 6 years?

I'd like you to do 2 things. You will need to do it for each EP/SP.
One is tick the box for XP compatibility, and the other is to UNtick the Disable Desktop Composition. (Then yours looks the same as mine).

OK, will do.
Yes, this machine, Vista, and my current sims install are all 6 years old. Only the graphics card is new.
BO helped me clean out my hacks, so I'm about to start the game. I'll make the above changes and load 'er up.
I'll report back...

Ahh.... just the graphics card. OK. Did you upgrade directX when you installed the new graphics card?

The crashing problem may be an artefact of the hacks, I'm crossing my fingers for you that this is the case.

Next option: can you have a look at your card, and tell me when the drivers were updated, or have they been updated since you installed the card?

Another quick question - what was your old graphics card? And do you still have it?
