Recognising Newer Graphics Cards for Sims2

Is there a list of nvidia drivers that cause the shadow bug, or a way to go about compiling one (I'd happily contribute...)?
I never experienced any shadow issues on my TS2 box with nvidia and that is why I figured I would buy from this maker in the future--now the near future is fast approaching as TS4 is about to come out and I'll need to build a new box for it (since I'm only taking this laptop and my netbook with me when I move)... but now I'm paranoid. I don't want to pay for a GPU I can't play my one-true-game with x___x but I want to get a newer GPU that can meet the needs of TS4 play.

What Lee said. If they say it's excellent, then it's up to them to either change the verdict, or find out exactly what they had to make it excellent.

Lee, yours is not an easy one to fix.
Download Nvidia Graphic Rules and Video Cards
This one has trace through it, please run Sims2 with it and upload the config for me to look at.
I have a feeling that your CPU is the problem, but the trace will let me know for sure.
Catherine - Lee suggested something, and I've been looking through the graphic rules. I've got a couple of ideas, and I'll get back to you later today or tomorrow about it. It will be a test fix, rather than a 'this will fix it' fix.

Catherine,
Step 1, is to see if I want I think is happening, is. Can you please download this set of cards
It will NOT fix the problem. What it will do is show me if a particular variable is set up or not. The one I am looking at is called 'CausticsEnabled' and I want to see if it's set to false. (I think that it is not, and that maybe the fix that the Maxis people put in for this sort of shadows problem).
What I need you to do is:
1. Put these cards in the config and CSConfig folder.
2. Open up your game and set your shadows to High.
3. Make sure the blocky shadow on the sim problem is happening.
4. Close the game.
5. Open up the game.
6. Upload the resulting xxxx-config-log.txt for me to look at.
This will tell me what's happening because I've put trace into the card. What will happen:
1. If the trace says that it's not set up - I'm going to set up the causticenabled false for your video card, and then I'll get you to retest the graphic rules again. This may fix it, or it may not. If it does fix it, then we can celebrate and squee. If it doesn't then we go on to point 2.
2. If the trace says it's set up or if changing it doesn't fix it, then I'm going to tweak your shadows so that when it's on high, all the shadows are on high except the sim shadows. This will make it almost exactly like medium, except that the object shadows will be back on. What that means is that you'll have a better shadows, even if it's not the best. Then we can retest this, to make sure that there aren't any other problems connected with shadows. If it's all good, then we can celebrate. If not, I will keep on looking.
