Yeah - a windows repair or Windows re-install should do the trick. I tried the repair, but I think one of the corruptions in the O/S is the ID because the repair reckoned it couldn't find the O/S. Even though it started the baby up not 2 minutes previously, and did it again afterwards with the infamous 'critical error'.
Previously when I had this sort of problem on older PC's , I ripped out the hard drives and threw in a blank one installed windows onto that, did a diskcheck, etc on the old drive, and then did a windows repair on the old one. This is what I suspect the maintenance guy will do - I didn't have a spare hard drive lying around this time. And for some reason my brain didn't think of it this time before calling in the cavalry.

Precisely! Therefor, I fear that it's a hardware problem. Some critical HD sectors got damaged, perhaps. Like exactly where the ID was stored, for example...

Update. Computer is coming home tomorrow morning all fixed. No data lost. $80AUD cash in hand
I'm happy - that's definitely better than having to spend 2K on a new PC.
