I'm trying to follow the rules so I hope I attached the right config file.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad
Windows 7 Professional SP1
Intel Core i7-4600M CPU @ 2.90GHz
4 GB 3.69GB usable
64-bit OS (Oh and the games are put into a "Program Files (x86)" - there are two Program Files)

I have read a lot of logs and here is the overview of the problem and what I have done.
New laptop. Have all Sims 2 and expansion packs. Installed - didn't work at all - wouldn't even launch skipping the launch process. Uninstalled all. Reinstalled and Double Deluxe worked in compatibility mode for Windows ME but not XP, either SP2 or SP3 and of course ran as admin. I kept installing in order, it kept working. I was excited.

But - basically it stopped once I added the last one - Mansions. I made sure all drivers were updated. I made sure old drivers were installed. I tried tweaking the code in the graphics config files that was recommended in Mod the Sims although I only did it in Sims2EP9 because that is the most recent expansion pack. And I STILL get the same error code that says: Failed to enumerate any DirectX 9 compatible graphics adapters in this system! etc.... and The application will now terminate.

So frustrated. And I'm not very tech savvy so changing code was hard but the step by step instructions helped immensely. Any help would be appreciated. I have Sims 3 (not on this laptop) and Sims 4 (on this laptop) but I have to say I like the game play and interaction of the Sims 2 best. I like making families and homes and having them all interact with each other. Oh, and I have no CC to mess things up - I don't know how to load it or use it so everything I have is original purchased CDs/DVDs with the activation codes.

Thanks so much to anyone who can help.

PS I'm so relieved there is a site that is current. So many of them the last post was YEARS ago. The recent activity here gives me hope. Thank you. Smile

Really struggling here. I have attached the information you need. Hopefully you can help.

I am on Windows 8.1

I get frequent crashing with a box saying that it has crashed and the application will close. I tried following your instructions but I then get a DirectX 9.0 error or something. This is where I get confused. Thanks.

@Jordan

Your config file says that your most recent expansion is SP7 which is the best of business collection. So you will need to do the following -

In the folders:
\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\The Sims 2 Best of Business Collection\SP7\TSBin\\TSData\Res\Config\
\Program Files (x86)\EA Games\The Sims 2 Best of Business Collection\SP7\TSBin\\TSData\Res\CSConfig\

1. make a copy of graphic rules.sgr and video cards.sgr and put them in a safe place. (I rename them from .sgr to .old) These will be backups of what you have in case anything goes wrong.
2. Download these two files and unzip/unrar them.
Download Graphic Rules - INTEL
Download Video Cards - INTEL ® HD with ID of 0106

3. Put the sgr files in the folders as listed above.
4. Run your game. Is your game working? Yes. Then all is good.
5. Is your Game not working?
6. Look at your config-log.txt. Does it have 'Kiri' in there? Yes - come back here and let me have a look at it so we can see what the problem is.

No - it hasn't picked up the changes, which means it's looking in a different folder for them.
Go through and put them in all the expansion pack folder trees that end in TSBin\\TSData\Res\Config\ and TSBin\\TSData\Res\CSConfig\
Go back to Step 4.

7. If its still not working and the 'Kiri' is not in your config-log.txt come back here and we'll look at it together.

Hello! Windows 7 user here.

I installed Graphics Rules Maker to resolve a black boxes under sims' feet issue. Checked 'Disable Sim Shadows' (nothing else) and game won't load; I get the dreaded DirectX 9.0 error. I got the game running in windowed mode, (ftr I don't like playing in windowed mode) and black boxes are still present under sims' feet. Game won't run in fullscreen. I wanted to restore Graphic Rules Maker autobackup, but I can't find it. DL'd and installed your Nvidia Graphics Rules but the config log doesn't say Kiri, so I don't know what's going on. I'm confused.

The NVidia one is set up differently to the INTEL one - it only has 'kiri' in it if there's an error. So that's ok. With this one installed, does it work ok apart from the shadow thing? The config log says that the configuration is working for you. Or are you getting the directx error again?

I get the DirectX error when I attempt to load the game in fullscreen mode, yes.

Update 3/2: One of my tumblr followers suggested a system restore, so I tried that. Restored to Feb 26 (current DirectX problem started Mar 1, after installing Graphics Rules Maker) and no dice. Graphics Rules Maker was removed, I believe, but I'm still getting a DirectX 9.0 error in fullscreen mode. Apologies for the somewhat redundant description of symptoms; I fear I was a bit unclear (hopefully I haven't made things even less so!).

Did I fall through the cracks? I noticed my log looked different - did I do something wrong? Any help much appreciated. Sims withdrawal.

My problem is solved. Thank you for being patient with this tech-challenged simmer! I am able to play in fullscreen mode since changing compatibility settings to Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and I no longer have black rectangles under sims' feet even with shadows on high, but I'm not sure what fixed things, because I wasn't trying to fix that yet; I wanted to solve the DirectX error first. In any case, I can play glitch-free with my settings where I want them. Happy ending!

- which goes to show that a newer version of Windows in itself can be the cause of problems. MicroSoft is trying to control too much, causing games to malfunction in the process. Thank you for reporting that, @halcionne.
